Matt White from Toronto started on pole (the Can-Am Cup is a challenge event sponsored by eFormulaCarNews.com pitting the best Canadian FF racers against the best Americans) and immediately found Shane Jantzi of Ayr hot on his heels. For the next 22 minutes plus one lap (a timed race with a bonus lap tacked on), those two traded the lead back and forth so many times it was almost impossible to keep count. My notebook jottings said it all: "Matt in front — again." "Shane back in front." "Matt!" "Shane!" "Last lap — Matt still ahead." "Shane passes M. on the backstretch!" They went into Mosport's final curve, Corner 10, for the last time side-by-side, fighting fiercely but fairly. At speeds averaging just a smidgen over 160 km/h, either could have moved to knock the other out of the way, or to bump the other's car enough to unsettle it and gain an advantage. But those two guys respect each other too much for that sort of nonsense so, in the words of track announcer Glenn Butt, it was a drag- race along the front stretch to the flag stand and Jantzi won it by about half a car length — or 0.017 seconds, to be precise. The first thing the winner did when he unbuckled his safety harness in front of the podium was to exit his car and go directly to White's, which was behind his in Winner's Circle. "Matt, that was awesome,"" Jantzi shouted through his helmet. "My hat's off to you for a great run." The Can-Am Cup challenge was started three years ago and Jantzi has won it every year. Said White in his podium interview: "Shane is my favourite driver to go wheel-to-wheel with. I've got my championships (he"s won two Ontario Formula Ford Series titles), now I just have to win this Cup!" Then he added, tongue-in-cheek: "Maybe Shane won't be here next year . . ." Jantzi was unable to participate in the traditional champagne-spraying ceremony — which included third-place finisher Dean Baker of Blackstock — because he couldn't get the plug out of his jug. "I don't know how to get this open," shouted the non-drinker, who keeps in shape for racing by running marathons. White showed him how. Although still young men, those two guys are not kids. While it's not too late for both to still have ambitions to move up in motorsport, the reality is that neither has the big bucks necessary to climb much higher on the ladder. So both said that unless they win the lottery, or are the recipient of some other, similar, good fortune, the chances are they'll be back battling each other in Formula Fords again next year. But you know what? If they keep racing each other like they did yesterday, they don't ever have to stop. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16 Sep 2008 For immediate release: Mortimer Racing Dominates 2008 OFFC Season Mortimer Racing is celebrating a dominant season in the Ontario Formula Ford Championship after clinching both A and B class titles over the weekend at Mosport International Raceway. Despite a disappointing showing in the final two races, Matt White was crowned class A champion with a total of 6 wins and 3 second place finishes, placing no worse than second in every race he completed. From the first race of the season, Matt established a points lead in the series that remained unchallenged to the end. Matt was the overall Champion in 2007. Lew Mackenzie, driving the Forbes and Manhattan sponsored Van Diemen, was crowned B class champion after a dominant season. Team owner Nigel Mortimer finished in second place driving a Euro Swift. A jubilant Matt White was quick to give credit to the Mortimer team as the reason behind his success. "I'm thrilled to be crowned the 2008 Ontario Formula Ford Challenge champion," he said. "This past weekend was very challenging for the entire Mortimer Racing crew after I suffered a huge crash on Saturday, causing the team to work throughout the night to rebuild the badly damaged car." Matt's fortunes did not improve on Sunday, as the car suffered a rare electrical problem while battling for the lead. "Fortunately our success and hard work throughout the entire season allowed us to overcome this weekends setbacks and capture the 2008 title," he said. Matt would like to thank his sponsors Sky's the Limit, Scott's Round-Up and ontrackdriver.com for their vital contribution to another winning effort. "This season would not have been possible without their endless support," said Matt. Matt and Lew would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the OFFC and the countless volunteers that make the Formula Ford series possible and one of the best racing series in North America. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12 Aug 2008: Mortimer Racing dominated the OFFC over a rainy weekend, earning 7 podium finishes in two days. Matt White reinforced his reputation in the A class as a rain master on Saturday, earning pole position and gaining 15 seconds on the second place car within the first lap. By the time he was given the chequered flag, Matt had lapped all but seven cars. Sunday saw a somewhat drier repeat performance, with Matt again starting from pole and immediately distancing himself from the pack, leading the race from flag to flag. Lew Mackenzie was a familiar face on the podium this weekend, scoring his first win in the rain on Saturday and posting a third on Sunday, reinforcing his lead in the B class championship. Caitlin Johnston employed the services of Team Mortimer for the weekend, racking up two third place A class finishes and claiming the honour of the fastest lap on Sunday. Returning to the racing scene after a 25-year hiatus, Dave Grimes placed a respectable third in the B class on Saturday, but was sidelined on Sunday after a spin in qualifying. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17 jun 2008: Reigning overall Formula Ford Challenge champion Matt White continues to cast a tall shadow over the series, posting two more podium finishes over the Father's Day weekend. Saturday's race saw Matt qualify third on the grid behind Shane Jantzi and rookie Conor Daly. The race proved to be a three way battle until the second-last lap when race leader Daly hit an oil patch on turn eight and spun off the track, collecting White and Jantzi and sending all three cars into the tire wall. After re-firing his engine Matt chased down Jantzi and overtook him to take the chequered flag. Father's day proved better for Matt in qualifying, where he took pole the position. The race turned out to be another tight battle between Matt, Daly, and Jantzi, who quickly checked out and continuously traded the lead amongst them. Lapped traffic became problematic and Matt found himself held up by a back marker on the second last lap, allowing Daly and Jantzi to pass. Matt was able to overtake Jantzi to finish second behind Daly. "Overall I'm very happy with the weekend as I was able to extend my points lead," says Matt. "Thanks to all my sponsors, Sky's the limit, On Track Driver.com and Scott's Roundup, I was able to post some respectable results again. The Mortimer Racing crew did a fantastic job as usual and I am looking forward to carrying this momentum into the 2nd half of the season." In B Class Lew MacKenzie had a stellar weekend with two wins before rushing off to introduce his new book at a book fair in Toronto. He certainly doesn't slow down with age ! As a result Mortimer Racing is leading both A and B Class championships with Matt and Lew respectively. Also of note Nigel Mortimer is second and Michel Jullian is fourth in B Class, both also running with the Mortimer Racing Team. 10 Jun 2008: Shannonville, races three and four of the OFFC series. Matt White won the Saturday race after a hard fought battle with Connor Daley and Shayne Jantzi, and set a new track record on Sunday in practice. Matt finished second to Shayne Jantzi on Sunday after a full course yellow halted Matt's charge to the front. The car had been set up to perform better in the latter stages of the race and so the full course yellow affected the outcome. Lew MacKenzie finished second in B class on Saturday and had to retire two laps from the end on Sundays race when the carburettor float broke. Also in B class Nigel Mortimer, driving the 94 EuroSwift finished third on Saturday and second on Sunday. Michel Jullian achieved his personal best time and had a great time dicing for position. As a result Matt White leads the A class championship and Lew MacKenzie and Nigel Mortimer are first and second respectively in the B class championship. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13 May 2008: As seen on eFormulaCar news Matt White commenced his 2008 Ontario Formula Ford Challenge season in perfect fashion over the weekend (May 10-11), winning both rounds of the season-opener at Mosport International Raceway. After the traditional Friday track test day and the morning qualifying session, Round One of the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge commenced Saturday morning with Brian Graham Racing’s Conor Daly and Mortimer Racing’s White leading the 23-car field to green flag. Getting a good launch into and exiting the first turn, the lead duo immediately commenced an exciting battle for first place. Despite repeatedly going side-by-side and swapping places around the fast 2.459-mile road course, the two drivers soon established a gap on Jantzi Racing’s Shane Jantzi, Baker Racing’s Dean Baker and Brian Graham Racing’s Hayden Duerson. While the action up front proved very entertaining, not far behind the fight for top honors in the B and C class were fun to watch. Mortimer Racing’s Lew MacKenzie and Brian Graham Racing’s Ivan Graham led the way in B, while Lee Racing’s Mike Lee held off the advances of Cove Racing’s Tony Cove in C. Adding further drama to the 15-lap affair, the race was briefly halted late in the going for a multi-car incident in turn two. On the ensuing restart, White and Daly resumed their battle for first, with Jantzi in hot pursuit. When the checkered flag waved, White had secured the win by three tenths of a second over Daly. Jantzi completed the top-three, leading Baker and Britain West Motorsports driver Rick Doktor to the flag. MacKenzie was the victor in the B class ahead of Graham, while Lee led the way in the C class ahead of Cove. Returning the fast road course west of Toronto one day later, White and Daly again started on the front-row, with the race one winner in P1. Renewing the battle for OFFC supremacy, Sunday’s race again featured White and Daly repeatedly exchanging the lead in front of Jantzi, Baker and Duerson. Deeper in the field Purdy Racing’s Dan Purdy led MacKenzie and Graham in the B class, while Lee easily retained the C class lead. As expected the win in Round Two came down to the final few corners. Holding off several spirited challenges from his second- generation racing counterpart, White completed the weekend sweep. Daly and Jantzi joined the race winner on the podium, leading Baker and Doktor to the start/finish. Purdy scored his first B class win of the season, narrowly edging MacKenzie, while Lee made it two in a row in the C class, beating Celvosky Racing’s Andrew Celvosky to the line. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11th May 2008: Mosport - Ontario: If the opening round of the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge is a sign of things to come, Matt White has good reason to be optimistic about the 2008 season. Matt continued his dominant streak from last year, adding two victories to his record at the opening weekend at Mosport International Raceway. Round one saw Matt qualify 2nd on the grid behind rookie Conor Daly, and he faced a tight battle for first against Daly and veteran Shane Jantzi during a chaotic race which included a 20 minute red flag due to crashes and breakdowns. At the subsequent green flag, Matt sprinted the final 5 laps to clinch his first win of the season. After gaining pole position on Sunday, Matt again duelled with Daly and lead the race for all but a handful of laps, receiving the chequered flag twice in as many days. "It's a great start to the season," said Matt. "To the credit of the Mortimer racing team, the car worked flawlessly all weekend and allowed me to focus on dusting off the cobwebs from the off-season. I'm looking forward to carrying this momentum to rounds three and four." Matt's car was sporting an array of new decals this weekend, and he was quick to thank the sponsors who have made this season possible. "I wouldn't be here this year without the tremendous support of Scotts Roundup, Sky's the Limit charity, and On Track Driver.com," he said. "They're great partners and I'm happy to provide these results for them." The Mortimer racing team was missing two key crew members this weekend in Herb and Deb Henning. The team sends them their best wishes and dedicates this pair of victories to them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
